I've located part 1 of my Big Rig story. Not sure when I posted this before, it was probably around October 2001. Never wrote part 2. It's another one I hope to revisit soon.

Big Rig Part 1

The forklift slowly backed away out of the flashy green and purple trailer. The backup-warning beeping echoing around the warehouse.

“Okay, that’s the last container,” Doug yelled to Billy.

“Thanks.” Billy closed the doors to his trailer, making sure it was securely locked.

“Oh, I’ve got one more thing for you. Wait here.”

Doug disappeared into the employee locker room. A few seconds later he reaappeared carrying a comic box. One that holds around 25-50 books.

“Here’s your latest order of books.” He handed them to Billy.

“Oh, great. I can’t wait to look through them.” Billy carried the comics to the tractor and placed them onto the passenger seat.

Returning to the warehouse, he shook Doug’s hand. “Well, it’s been a pleasure. I’m going to missed coming here every week.”

“I’m going to miss you too. But at least your replacement driver will be delivering the comics to you. I’d hate to loose your business.” Doug said.

“I’d be a fool to go anyone else. You’re a regular sherlock when it comes to finding hard to find first issues.” Billy smiled. “I guess I’ve better go say goodbye to the girls and get the paperwork.”

“If you’re ever in the area, be sure to look us up.”

“I will,” Billy said. He walked towards the back of the warehouse where the offices were. He opened the door to the shipping and receiving office and walked right into his own farewell party.

“There’s our man of honor,” Blanche said. She was eyeing Billy up and down as if checking out her new meal.

“Girls, I thought I asked you not to do this,” Billy said.

“What made you think they would listen to you when they won’t listen to me?” Sophia asked.

“Sophia!” Dorothy snapped.

“This reminds me of the time my hometown threw a party for my great-uncle….”

“Rose!” everyone yelled, cutting her off from yet another boring story.

“Girls, this was sweet of you, but I’m pressed for time.” Billy looked into their dissappoined faces. “So, let’s have cake and party so I can get on the road,” he said.

The four women immediate sprang into action and in seconds, Billy was seated at a desk with four slices of cakes in front of him. For each lady insisted that he take a piece from her and he ended up having to take them all.

“We wish you weren’t giving up this route,” Rose said.

“Girls, I love you all. And the last few years have been great, but I’ve made my decision.”

“I hope she’s worth it,” Blanche said.

“Oh, believe me she is,”

“Let’s see the ring again,” Dorothy said.

Billy pulled the ring out of his pocket, happy that he had the foresight to bring it back with him. He showed them the ring last week when he first announce his decision to quit driving and take a more active role in running his business so he could propose to his girlfriend of five years.

The women surrounded him and admired the ring again while he finished his cake, making sure he cleaned up all four plates.

“Girls, I’m afraid I must run,” Billy said. That simple statement set off a chain reaction, starting with Rose then Sophia, Blanche and ending with Dorothy all hugging and clinging onto Billy while wheeping and wailing. After a few moments of grief and well-wishes, Billy managed to sneak out of the office.

Back at his truck, he ran a quick inspection of truck and load. Satisfied, he climbed into the tractor and pulled out of the dock heading towards the freeway. It was going to take him three days to get to his destination and another 2 days from there to get home to his sweetheart and business. Deanna has been after him to quit driving for over a year saying that she would never marry him as long as he was delivering dangerous loads.

He first started driving five years earlier at the age of 28. After a couple of years of driving for other people and making very little money, he bought a truck and started his own business delivering dangerous chemicals from one warehouse to another over 1,500 miles away. Because the chemicals were so dangerous to transport, he was paid a fortune. Now five years later, with over two thousand trucks in his company, he was retiring his route to stay home and run the business so he could marry Deanna.

He recently hired a new driver to take his place with this route. A driver that will be his highest paid employee because of the danger.
Billy checked his mirrors and found as usual that he had the highway to himself. This was a long, lonely stretch of highway with very little curves. Made for a nice relaxing drive and a perfect time to look over his comics.

He reached over and lifted the lid off the comic box that he received from Doug. Doug had been his comic supplyer for over 10 years. They met through the classifieds in a comic related magazine that has long since been out of business. At first Doug would mail the comics to Billy. Once Billy bought his truck and was looking for business, Doug introduced him to his boss and the rest became history. With a perfect outlet for Billy to receive his comics without having to pay a fortune in shipping and handling.

He pulled the first comic out of the box. It was the number one issue of Captain America. Doug has been trying to locate this issue for Billy since they first met. He must of kept it a surprise as a going away present.

Deciding to read it later, Billy placed the Captain America issue aside and pulled out the next issue. It was the latest Spider Man issue. That too went in the pile to read later. Billy wasn’t as excited as he used to be with Spider Man. Although he was looking forward to the movie.
Pulling out one comic after another he looked though his latest additions to his collection. Some comics he placed to the side to look at later when he could pay more attention to them. Others he read as he drove down the road.

He checked the mirrors and dropped his comic. There was a car approaching behind him. A rare sight indeed on this lonely road. The car appeared to be speeding. Billy kept checking the mirrors, not happy about how quickly the car was catching up to him. He expected it to move over anytime to pass.

The car was getting closer. And closer still. Billy turned on his left signal and prepared to move over when he realized that he didn’t have time. As the car hit his trailer he looked down at his dropped comic. It was opened to a full page spread of Superman flying over metropolis.

It would be years before the radiation died down enough for athorities to get to the scene of the crash. The only thing they found was a burned out car, it’s driver nothing but a pile of ashes. The forest green with purple trim semi-truck of one Billy Zippler was never found. And Billy himself, was never seen again.
